Hyderabad: Manipal Hospitals on Thursday said it has entered into an exclusive pact with DaVita Kidney Care to provide world-class nephrology services in Bengaluru.

The tie-up allows kidney patients to have seamless access to dialysis centres run by DaVita and the panel of nephrologists from Manipal Hospitals, Manipal said in a statement.

DaVita Kidney Care is part of US-based kidney care company DaVita Healthcare Partners Inc., with presence across 11 countries and more than 2,225 locations.

In India, DaVita operates 17 dialysis and kidney care centres providing holistic care for acute to end-stage renal disease patients.

In addition to existing three dialysis centres in Benguluru, DaVita will be adding three more in the city in coming months. The upcoming dialysis centres will also be part of the tie-up between the two entities.

Dialysis is a process to filter harmful wastes, salt and excess fluid from blood for people with kidney failure.

“With this partnership, patients from MHE will have access to their own nephrologists with out-patient consultation at DaVita and in turn, DaVita’s patients undergoing dialysis will have access to a world-class team of nephrologists and transplant surgeons," said Sudarshan Ballal, chairman of Manipal Hospitals. Ballal is a senior nephrologist.

Chronic kidney disease is emerging globally and rapidly increasing particularly in patients suffering from diabetes and hypertension. In India, diabetes and hypertension account for 40-60% of renal failures.

“Currently, 229 million people in the country have incidence of end stage kidney disease and need renal replacement therapy," said S. Vishwanath, head of nephrology at Manipal Hospitals. “With the rise of chronic kidney diseases and long-term dialysis requirements, this partnership is a step in a positive direction."
